HOW IT WORKS

Initial Consultation - Complementary

This is a brief 20-30 minute call, FaceTime, or Zoom visit to understand your challenges, provide some tips and tricks to make life easier, and consider additional steps.

Assess and Evaluate

Should a family desire for more specific support, we can schedule an assessment to get more information.  Our assessment session will be about 1.5 hours at the location of your choice.  I will get to know your child and perform an evaluation to determine strengths and areas of difficulty to develop a treatment plan to address your main concerns such as:

  • Is your child having difficulty holding a pencil, tying shoelaces, using utensils, or manipulating small objects?  These are some of the fine motor skill difficulties I can address.

  • Does your child have difficulty writing neatly? Mixes up words when copying from the board? Can't catch a ball?   Visual function and spatial awareness activities can help.

  • Is your child overly sensitive to touch? Doesn't like hugs? Distressed by loud noises? Has tantrums when it's time to leave? Doesn't tolerate changes in plans, routines, or expectations?  These are some of the sensory processing challenges we will work through.

  • Does your child appear clumsy or uncoordinated? Do they avoid activities such as swinging or riding a bike? Do they have high energy? Do they spin and spin and never seem to get dizzy?  Sensory processing and motor planning challenges incorporating the vestibular system (balance, head position in relation to gravity), and proprioception (body position in space, appropriate force for tasks) are supported for progress.

  • Does your child struggle with emotional regulation, initiating tasks, sustaining focus, transitions, planning, organization, completing multi-step tasks?  Executive functioning skills can be a challenge, especially as the expectations increase in upper elementary, middle and high school and early college.

Intervention and Therapy

A treatment plan will outline goals based on findings and your primary concerns.  Therapy is where we get to have fun!  As far as your child is concerned, OT is a time to play! In reality play is a vehicle to work on establishing regulation, develop skills, and build confidence.  As for an older child, teen or young adult, this is a guided opportunity to develop confidence, self-awareness, learn skills, tools and strategies to reach their potential.  Intervention is most successful with family involvement. My mission is to identify strengths, interests and apply intervention strategies that are fun and meaningful.  Then share strategies, information and tools with parents, to continue OT intervention across the day and week!  This is how the magic really happens!!

Collaboration and Education

I work closely with parents, caregivers, teachers, and other healthcare professionals to ensure a holistic approach to a child's development. Providing education and guidance to parents on strategies to support their child's progress and promote the carryover of therapeutic techniques at home and school is one of my top priorities. I will also collaborate with teachers and other professionals to create appropriate accommodations and adaptations in the child's learning environment, helping them succeed in academic and social settings.

Here for you. And your child.
