Karen Smith was our daughter's CVUSD occupational therapist for a few years. Karen's dedication, creativity, and enthusiasm made her an exceptional resource. We Are So Grateful

Our son struggled with slowing down and controlled slower movements, fine motor skills, and hand writing fatigue. We were also faced with a constant power struggle, lack of flexibility in things and difficulty handling emotions. He also struggled with self confidence in his ability to learn at school as he was constantly comparing himself to other students in his class. Mrs Karen came in and was immediately able to connect with him through play based learning. She quickly identified issues and created a tailored plan for our son to help address areas she noticed could be improved. She would also ask if there was anything new that happened during the week that she should address and even if we told her something during session she found ways to incorporate corrective measures into the session. Through OT exercises and games he quickly gained body strength and learned to utilize both sides of his brain in activities. She helped correct his hand writing technique which lead to less issues at school and during homework time. She helped him understand his emotions and what causes him to move through the stages of calm to mad to angry. She also gave our family a common language to communicate our feelings and emotions in a calm way. She helped bring the power back to us parents while still showing that his input was valued and considered. Mrs Karen helped tremendously and we are go grateful. With Mrs Karen, things are much better today and we feel we have the tools to connect and work through any flare ups with our son. Mrs Karen is an excellent resource and highly recommend her!

A Life Changing Experience

We reached out to Karen to help us work with our 6 yr old on emotional regulation due to multiple outbursts/tantrums at home and school per day. Some days it felt like the whole day was just one long tantrum with only the briefest moments of respite before things devolved into chaos once again from wakeup until bedtime and both my husband and I were beyond frustrated and thoroughly exhausted without any clue how to make things better. Everyday tasks like going to the grocery store, visiting a restaurant as a family, play dates with friends, etc. were outside the realm of possibility for him because he lacked the ability to participate in any kind of a group activity unless it was *exactly* what he wanted to be doing in *exactly* the way he wanted to be doing it. Within just a few weeks of implementing the strategies she introduced we started to see tangible improvements and our household started to feel like a more manageable place.

By the time we reached our first benchmark check-in, we'd achieved the vast majority of our initial goals, the outbursts went from being 10+/day, to 1-3/day, and even a day or two per week without any major outbursts at all! (Something my husband and I didn't believe was possible before we started working with Karen). Along with decreasing the frequency, the coping strategies and skills she taught all of us also helped reduce the duration and intensity of the episodes as well. Throughout each session Karen is able to teach my child the skills and strategies needed for success and development while simultaneously teaching my husband and I the tools and techniques to support him as he grows. She is a wealth of knowledge and creativity. She arrives at every session with a plan for what she’s hoping to share, but is ready to pivot and adapt as needed if/when circumstances show that there’s a better path forward for my kiddo. After just a few months of working with her, we have seen more progress than with any other therapist/mental health professional we’ve seen in the ~4 years since his diagnosis. When I say that working with Karen has been a life changing experience, this isn’t in any way an overstatement of her impact on our family.

Karen worked with my son (5, ASD) for 6 months. She was very polite and thorough in her occupational therapy. She was always willing to answer my questions and help in any way we needed. She stepped up when our previous OT had to take an extended leave for medical reasons.

Karen came to our home and always had a lot of great activities for my son. As a former school based OT she truly understood how schools worked and how to navigate them. I believe she helped my son grow in his fine and gross motor skills.
